Gerald A. Lawson, video game pioneer

Picture

The first home video game system consoles could only play one or two built in games. If you wanted to play new games, you had to buy a new console. Gerald (Jerry) A. Lawson, a largely self-taught engineer, became a pioneer in electronic video entertainment. He led the team that created the first home video game console with interchangeable cartridges, the Channel F (for fun), which allowed you to buy new games. Lawson also designed the first joystick. Watch an interview with Jerry here.

The IGDA Black in Games (BIG) SIG is a community of diverse professionals in the game industry who come together for networking, friendship, professional development, and celebration. BIG is an action SIG. Using game design techniques, education forums and interactive workshops, BIG strives to bring awareness and activism into the game industry in regards to race and discrimination.

Jerry Lawson Award for Achievement in Game Development

The Jerry Lawson Award for Achievement in Game Development is a tool to highlight the accomplishments of a person who identifies as an under-represented minority in the game development community, with a specific recognition of work directly related to game development. By highlighting advancements in the industry and products we love, the IGDA Foundation hopes to raise awareness of the many people who have made an important contribution to game development in the industry’s history.

Slay by Brittney Morris

Ready Player One meets The Hate U Give in this dynamite debut novel that follows a fierce teen game developer as she battles a real-life troll intent on ruining the Black Panther–inspired video game she created and the safe community it represents for Black gamers.

By day, seventeen-year-old Kiera Johnson is an honors student, a math tutor, and one of the only Black kids at Jefferson Academy. But at home, she joins hundreds of thousands of Black gamers who duel worldwide as Nubian personas in the secret multiplayer online role-playing card game, SLAY. No one knows Kiera is the game developer, not her friends, her family, not even her boyfriend, Malcolm, who believes video games are partially responsible for the “downfall of the Black man.”

But when a teen in Kansas City is murdered over a dispute in the SLAY world, news of the game reaches mainstream media, and SLAY is labeled a racist, exclusionist, violent hub for thugs and criminals. Even worse, an anonymous troll infiltrates the game, threatening to sue Kiera for “anti-white discrimination.”

Driven to save the only world in which she can be herself, Kiera must preserve her secret identity and harness what it means to be unapologetically Black in a world intimidated by Blackness. But can she protect her game without losing herself in the process?

Student Access Program
The easier way for Pitt County Schools students to access library books, computers, and online resources.  Every PCS student has a special Farmville Public Library account, which allows students to use their student ID number instead of a traditional library card.  Students may bring their student ID number to the library to check out or access materials, or library staff will gladly look up their account number for them.  For online resources that require a pin number, students can use the last 4 digits of their student ID number as their pin.  PCS student files will be updated quarterly to ensure up-to-date records and parents can opt out at any time.

Banned Books Week

In celebration of Banned Books Week, library staff has chosen to spotlight books that we "hate!" Thanks to the Freedom to Read, you can check them out from the Farmville Public Library! Because libraries don't ban books-even "bad" ones.

Challenged Book Spotlight

Picture
In late 2017, The Hate U Give was banned by school officials in Katy, Texas, where it was challenged for “inappropriate language.” District Superintendent Lance Hindt pulled the book from shelves during the review process in violation of the district’s own review policies, claiming he did so based on its “pervasive vulgarity and racially-insensitive language…not its substantive content or the viewpoint expressed.” The move drew widespread condemnation from free expression advocates, but the actions of a teen in the district helped save the day. Ny’Shira Lundy collected 4,000 signatures on a petition calling for the restoration of the book. The district relented and put it back on shelves, but it wasn’t a total victory. Students are required to get parental permission to check it out.  Click or tap to learn more from Banned Books Week.
