Children's Library

​Welcome! ​Located on the 1st floor of Farmville Public Library, the Children's Library is free and open to the public. The Children's Library features books for ages birth to 12, a Maker Space art room and an Early Learning Play space, a private meeting room, Internet connected computers for ages 12 and under, and comfortable seating to read, work, or study. The Children's Library offers a variety of programs and self-led activities. For information on obtaining a library account, visit the About section. Visit the sections below to learn more. Early Literacy at Your Library!

Children ages 0-6 and their adults are invited to visit the library for Weekly Storytimes, monthly Saturday Storytime and Friday Literacy Nights, Special events, and a StoryWalk®. While the programs feature activities appropriate for ages 0-6, children of any age are welcome to attend. No registration is required for Storytime. ​All program are free and open to the public and no library card is needed to attend. Wednesday, 10/09 at 10:30am
​Family Storytime at the Farmville Community Garden
4355 W. Cotton St, Farmville.
All ages are invited to tour the garden and read Hopefully the Scarecrow. We'll snack on beans, peppers, and other fresh grown from the garden. Parking is along the street.

Lapsit: ​Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:30am

Ages 0-15 Baby Lapsit Storytime: for babies and pre-walkers. The 30-minute program includes a read-together book, lap bounces, music, and movement with shaker eggs and scarves, and concludes with bubbles. Each family is provided a copy of the featured Read Together book to share during the program.

Toddler Storytime: Wednesdays at 10:30am

​Kids can waddle, toddle and wiggle during Toddler Time for ages 1-3. The 30-minute program includes a read-together book, lap bounces, music, and movement with shaker eggs and scarves, and concludes with the bubble dance. Each family is provided a copy of the featured Read Together book to share during the program.

Preschool Storytime: ​Thursdays at 10:30am

Preschool Storytime features early literacy activities for ages 4-5 including a picture book read aloud, music and movement, and a hands-on activity including STEM and art projects. ​

​Craft Kits

​Enjoy a story together at the library! Stop by the 1st floor desk, grab the book of the week and find a comfy spot to read in the library.  Bring the book back to the desk before you leave and take a craft kit to make in the library's Maker Space or at home.

  • 10:30am Costume Parade at the StoryWalk®
    Meet Miss Heather at the StoryWalk for an interactive reading of Room on the Broom. Families can come in costume as we walk the story path for fun tricks and sweet treats. Our friends dinosaur, unicorn, and shark will walk with us. The story is spread along a 0.25 paved path. The StoryWalk® is located at 4030 Dale Drive, Farmville. 
Friday, 10/25 Family Lit Night

    Families are encouraged come in costume to watch a performance of the book Creepy Carrots     and then go on a Spooktacular search around the library for treats .

​The StoryWalk® is self-led interactive experience for all ages. Each month, a new picture book is featured, with the pages spread across 18 stations encouraging families to read and move along the 0.25 paved path to continue the story. The paved walking path is perfect for strollers and new walkers. The StoryWalk®  is located at 4030 Dale Drive. Visit the StoryWalk® anytime between sunrise and sunset.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the StoryWalk® with the book The Piñata That the Farm Maiden Hung by Samantha R. Vamos.
​
A young girl sets out on errands for the day, and while she's gone, the farm maiden prepares a piñata from scratch with help from a boy, horse, goose, cat, sheep, and farmer. After they all fall asleep in the afternoon sun, they must scramble to finish preparations in time--just as the girl arrives back to her surprise party. ​

Octobber

This fun family read-aloud is the perfect way to start Halloween celebrations and an ideal gift book. A sweet story of quick wits, friendship, and inclusivity from the creators of The Gruffalo! 

The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch's hat, then her bow, and then her wand!  Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom.  But is there room on the broom for so many friends?  And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?

Hispanic Heritage Month

Saturday, 10/12 Wicked Science
  • 12pm: Pre-registration is encouraged. Email Heather or call the library. Junior scientists, join us in the STEAM laboratory to create a Boo Bot that floats across the room and glows in the dark. Race your bot against other scientists. We'll listen to The Skull: A Tyrolean Folktale by Jon Klassen. This activity includes small objects such as a cell battery, googly eyes, and a small motor. Pre-registration is encouraged. Email Heather or call the library. The program is recommended for ages 8-12 and is free and open to the public. ​
Friday, 10/25 Tricks and Treats After Dark
  • 6:30pm Join us for spooktacular tales, that are slightly spooky but mostly silly. To find your treats, you have to explore the darkened library but watch out for a trick or two.​

Library Card

A library card is available to those who live and work in Pitt County as well as neighboring counties. If you have a library card from a participating NC Cardinal library, you can use it in Farmville. Your library card gives you access to the Libby app, including the E-iNC library and NC Kids Digital Library. Visit the library's kids e-book section of the website to learn more. You can borrow materials from 52 library systems across the state through NC Cardinal Resource Sharing.
  • Library cards are free for anyone 5 years or older. Adults, please bring a picture ID. If your address is incorrect on the ID, simply show staff a document with your current address.
  • Books are checked out for one 3 week period with an automatic renewal of 3 weeks.
  • NO "overdue" fees. The library is fine free, so you don't have to stress about late fees. 
  • Borrow up to 50 books per account.
  • Choose from millions of books through the NC Cardinal online catalog. Place a hold from any NC Cardinal Library and the item will be available to pick up and return through Farmville Public Library at no cost to you. Take your library card with you when you travel, because the card is valid at over 64 counties across the state. FPL is the only library in Pitt County that participates in NC Cardinal.

e-books and e-audio

NC Kids Digital Library offers e-books, audiobooks, streaming videos, and Read-Alongs. This collection was designed for youth ages pre-K through 4th grade and includes picture books, youth fiction, youth non-fiction, and more. Titles can be accessed from your desktop. Mobile and tablet customers, download the OverDrive app for iOS and Android.
Getting Started
Click on the link to begin using NC Kids Digital Library. To sign in and checkout items from the NC Kids Digital Library click SIGN IN on the upper right side of the page. Select your library from the list of Libraries and enter your library card number. You can also access NC Kids Digital Library using the Libby app. Already using the Libby app to access ebooks and more from your Library? Follow these steps to find a Library and and add it to your Libby app. You can then switch back and forth between your library and NC Kids Digital Library.

Imagination Library

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age 5, no matter their family’s income. Thanks to North Carolina law makers, Smart Start and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library are working together to get books into the hands of North Carolina’s youngest children. Let your imagination soar in the Maker Space. The library provides pre-made activity kits and well as supplies to create on your own. A die cut machine with a variety of cut outs is available to use.

Early Learning Play Space

​Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood. 
Adults can relax in comfortable seating while kids engage in playful learning. The space features a play kitchen, train table, work bench, puppet theater, building blocks and tiles, and puzzles.

    Book Sets. Staff will select a fiction and nonfiction book based on your child's interests.
